Vol. 537 No. 5

Written Answers. - Hospital Waiting Lists.

John McGuinness

Ceist:

281 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Health and Children the reason a person (details supplied) in County Kilkenny has not been admitted for treatment to St. Luke's Hospital, County Kilkenny; if his attention has been drawn to the written complaints regarding this case made by the consultant to the South Eastern Health Board; and his views on whether theatre staff in this area are under-utilised, consultants frustrated and waiting lists growing. [16510/01]

The admission of patients is a matter for the hospital and the clinicians involved. I have asked the chief executive at the board to inquire into this matter and to write directly to the Deputy.

I am aware of the service difficulties at the hospital and have recently given approval to the South Eastern Health Board to proceed with the fitting out of two floors above the new coronary care unit at a cost of £2 million. This new development, which will provide for 28 additional beds, will significantly increase the capacity of the hospital to deal with service demands.
