Vol. 537 No. 5

Written Answers. - Mental Health Services.

Dinny McGinley

Ceist:

310 Mr. McGinley asked the Minister for Health and Children if it is intended to close St. Conal's Psychiatric Hospital, Letterkenny, County Donegal; and if so, the alternative accommodation which will be provided. [16683/01]

"Planning for the Future" recommended the relocation of long stay patients from long stay wards in psychiatric hospitals into more suitable residences and homes in the community.

Some 50 patients were relocated from St. Conal's hospital in 2000 and plans are in train for the relocation of the last remaining 38 long stay psychiatric and 16 elderly patients. I am informed by the health board that negotiations are at an advanced stage for the purchase of residential property in the community to accommodate these patients. As a result, St. Conal's campus has been and continues to be redeveloped to meet new and emerging health service needs.
