Vol. 537 No. 5

Written Answers. - Sports Rehabilation Courses.

Brian O'Shea

Ceist:

375 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Health and Children the proposals he has to ensure that graduates from the Carlow IT BSc course in sports rehabilitation will have their qualifications recognised by the appropriate professional bodies in the health and paramedical areas (details supplied); and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17245/01]

Physiotherapists wishing to work in the public health service must satisfy certain minimum qualification requirements. At present, a person seeking employment in the public health service as a physiotherapist is required to possess an honours degree qualification in physiotherapy from one of the country's two recognised schools of physiotherapy – at Trinity College, Dublin, or University College Dublin – or to have a qualification at least equivalent thereto.

The Institute of Technology, Carlow, has not, to my Department's knowledge, applied to have its BSc course in sports rehabilitation recognised as a qualifying course for employment in the public health service as a physiotherapist.

Question No. 376 answered with Question No. 365.
