Vol. 537 No. 5

Written Answers. - Gaming and Lotteries Acts.

Richard Bruton

Ceist:

487 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the present limits for stakes and prize money for gaming and amusement machines; the limits for such stakes and prizes in euro coins which will operate as from 1 January 2002; and if he intends to implement any such limits by appropriate legislation. [16852/01]

The limits currently in place under the Gaming and Lotteries Act, 1956, for gaming are 2.5p for stakes and 50p for prizes. The report of the interdepartmental review group on the Gaming and Lotteries Act, 1956, recommended an increase in these limits in conjunction with the implementation of new legislation to replace the 1956 Act. The preparation of this legislation is being considered at present within the context of the overall legislative programme within my Department.

The limits on stakes and prizes which will apply following the introduction of the euro will be the euro equivalent of 0.03 and 0.63 or 3 and 63 cents respectively. Legislation will not be required in this context.
