Vol. 537 No. 5

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Michael Bell

Ceist:

577 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Education and Science the reasons for the continuing delay in the processing of the extension plan for Scoil Uí Mhuiri, Dunleer, County Louth; when the vocational education committee first made an application; when planning permission was granted by Louth County Council; when the work was sanctioned by his Department; the estimated cost of the extension; when it will commence fol lowing tender; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16961/01]

Phase I of the extension project for Scoil Uí Mhuiri was completed in the mid 1990s in such a way as to facilitate the later addition of a second phase, if this became necessary as a result of demographic changes. County Louth Vocational Education Committee applied to my Department for funding towards the purchase of a site for phase II of the extension to the school in November 1995. The site purchase was completed by the VEC in 1999. My Department funded the VEC to make this purchase. The architectural planning process for phase II of the extension commenced prior to the completion of the site purchase, but only limited progress could be made with this as long as there continued to be uncertainty as to availability of the site.

I am pleased to inform the Deputy that a stage 3 (developed sketch scheme) has now been submitted to my Department and is being examined at present. The next stage of the architectural planning process will include obtaining planning permission for the phase II extension. Assuming that planning permission is obtained I do not anticipate any significant delay in completing the architectural planning process. At this early stage it is not possible to estimate the cost of the project. It is too early to predict when it will be possible to seek tenders for the construction of the extension, but every effort will be made to do this as soon as possible.

At present my Department is liaising with the VEC regarding the provision of temporary accommodation for use by the school until the new permanent accommodation can be provided.

Ruairí Quinn

Ceist:

578 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the fact that a primary school (details supplied) in Dublin 6 has grown and will in September 2001 have five teachers and 165 students; if his attention has further been drawn to the fact that the school's building programme has been put on hold; when the school in question will be given authorisation to proceed to the next stage in the process of building a new refurbished school; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16962/01]

My Department is currently considering an application from the authorities of the school referred to by the Deputy for refurbishment of their existing premises.

In view of the large number of school building projects being dealt with by my Department at present it is not possible at this point to provide a time frame as to when architectural planning for a refurbishment project at the school will commence.

The school authorities will be informed of any developments in the matter.
