Vol. 537 No. 5

Written Answers. - Work Permits.

Jack Wall

Ceist:

136 Mr. Wall asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment when a person (details supplied) in County Kildare will be granted a work permit; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [16830/01]

Work permits are issued by my Department to employers in respect of specific vacancies which they have been unable to fill with suitable persons from within the European economic area, EEA. Work permits are not issued to prospective employees.

I understand that the individual concerned has already entered the State on a D-study visa and now wishes to change her status to allow her to work. This can be considered by the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform if the employment is related to the course of studies that the person was pursuing. My Department is not in a position to consider an application for a work permit until the visa status of the applicant in question has been regularised.
