Vol. 538 No. 2

Written Answers. - Driving Licences.

Michael Creed

Ceist:

111 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will make arrangements whereby the holders of provisional and full driving licences are notified in advance of their licence expiring in order that the problem of a person (details supplied) in County Cork can be avoided in the future; and if, in this particular circumstance, there is anything he can do to facilitate the issue of a renewal licence without the obligation of sitting a further driving test. [17573/01]

I intend that the national driver file, when completed, will facilitate the issue of renewal notices for driving licences.

In relation to the particular matter referred to in the question, it is a matter for the appropriate licensing authority, in this case Cork County Council, to determine the eligibility of a person for a driving licence and to issue licences. The regulations provide that a lapsed driving licence may only be renewed within a period of ten years from the date of its expiry.
