Vol. 539 No. 1

Written Answers. - On-Farm Valuation Scheme.

P. J. Sheehan

Ceist:

50 Mr. Sheehan asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development the steps he will take to compensate farmers who were compelled to sell young cattle under the BTE scheme during the latter part of 2000 and the commencement of 2001 at a low price; and if he will pay a subsidy on such animals. [18355/01]

Following extensive negotiations with the farming bodies, I introduced the on-farm market valuation scheme on a phased basis in early February 2001 to compensate farmers for certain defined breakdowns for TB and brucellosis. The April 1998 compensation scheme arrangements continued to apply for all breakdowns prior to 1 January 2001 and to those breakdowns who did not qualify or opt for the on-farm market valuation scheme. I am not aware of any promise made to the farming bodies in relation to any additional payment other than those provided under the compensation arrangements.
