Vol. 540 No. 2

Written Answers. - Working Time Hours.

Brian Hayes

Ceist:

86 Mr. B. Hayes asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if she proposes to reduce the working week to 35 hours per week similar to a recent change in the law in France; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [20363/01]

The Organisation of Working Time Act, 1997, which implemented EU Council Directive 93/104/EC of 23 November 1993 concerning certain aspects of the organisation of working time, provides for an average maximum hourly working week of 48 hours averaged generally over a four month period. It is possible for employers and employees to negotiate a lower hourly working week.

I have no plans at present to lower the threshold on weekly working hours provided for in the Organisation of Working Time Act, 1997.

Question No. 87 answered with Question No. 85.
