Vol. 540 No. 3

Written Answers. - Register of Electors.

Noel Ahern

Ceist:

216 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the position regarding the voters' register for a person with a D designation who did not have a vote in the recent referendum; if this is correct for a person born in the UK; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20731/01]

The compilation of the register of electors is the responsibility of each registration authority in accordance with electoral law. Article 47.3 of the Constitution provides that the right to vote at a referendum shall be confined to citizens of Ireland who are eligible to vote at Dáil elections. The letter D placed against the name of an elector on the register indicates that the person concerned is a British citizen and is entitled to vote at Dáil, European and local elections only.
