Vol. 540 No. 3

Written Answers. - Garda Operations.

Frances Fitzgerald

Ceist:

284 Ms Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the situation regarding "Operation Oíche" in the Dublin area; the statistics regarding the number of those who have been charged in relation to offences as a result of this operation; and if he will report on progress and future plans. [20548/01]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that "Operation Oíche" has been very successful in focusing attention on and promoting a proactive approach to public order and alcohol related issues within the Dublin region. A more visible Garda presence on the streets has been apparent to members of the public, particularly following public house and nightclub closings at weekends.

I am also informed that, since the introduction of the operation on 9 October 2000, a total of 24,217 public order and intoxicating liquor related offences have been detected in the Dublin metropolitan region. In particular, I understand that there has been high arrest levels under the Criminal Justice (Public Order) Act, 1994.

I am further informed that "Operation Oíche" has been extended for a further period of time and that the Garda authorities have made a decision to intensify activity, particularly with regard to the detection of the sale and supply of intoxicating liquor to under-age persons. In this respect, members of the Garda Síochána are paying frequent visits to licensed premises to enhance awareness of licensees' responsibilities.
I am assured by the Garda authorities that "Operation Oíche" has proven to be very effective to date and that its high visibility, proactive approach has acted as a strong deterrent to possible offenders.
