Vol. 540 No. 3

Written Answers. - Garda Deployment.

Pat Rabbitte

Ceist:

285 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the reason for the delay in implementing the decision to grant Tallaght Garda station divisional status with accompanying additional resources; if his attention has been drawn to the pressing need for an additional neighbourhood Garda station in the densely populated west Tallaght area; and if additional Garda will be allocated to the Tallaght region; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20554/01]

I am informed by the Garda authorities, who are responsible for the detailed allocation of personnel and resources to individual areas, that the divisional headquarters of DMA South will be transferred from Crumlin Garda station to Tallaght Garda station once the additional accommodation is completed. In this regard, a sketch scheme was signed off by local Garda management at a meeting on 4 July 2001.

I am further informed by the Garda authorities that there are currently no plans to establish an additional Garda station in the Tallaght area. The manpower strength of Tallaght Garda station, all ranks, as at 31 December for each of the three years and currently is as follows:

Year

Strength

1998

139

1999

142

2000

159

4/7/01

157

The above figures represent an increase of 13% in the manpower allocated to Tallaght Garda station between 31 December 1998 and 4 July 2001. Tallaght District, DMA, has an allocation of 25 vehicles and can call on an additional 30 vehicles from divisional resources. The situation will be kept under review and when additional manpower next becomes available the needs of Tallaght will be fully considered within the overall context of the needs of Garda districts throughout the country.
