Vol. 540 No. 3

Written Answers. - Schools Industry Link Scheme.

Noel Ahern

Ceist:

334 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Education and Science his views on the schools industry link scheme as operated by eight schools in the Finglas-Cabra area; if he will grant extra teaching hours with an allocation of 0.25 WTE per school in order to encourage and facilitate the scheme; and if he has consider the application for the installation of a business centre in each school at a total cost of £256,000 and ongoing annual cost of £75,000 for co-ordination and maintenance of equipment. [20655/01]

Teaching allocations are made to schools and vocational education committees based on pupil-teacher ratios together with a number of ex quota and concessionary posts. There is no provision at present for the allocation of specific additional teaching allocations in respect of the scheme in question. The deployment of allocated teaching posts to various teaching functions is a matter for the relevant school authorities.

The accommodation needs of a school are determined by reference to the curricular options on offer at the school, projected enrolments, the number of teaching posts and related criteria. The need for a business centre at a school requires to be assessed in light of competing priorities and demands for capital investment in schools.
