Vol. 540 No. 3

Written Answers. - Rail Services.

Ruairí Quinn

Ceist:

80 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if it is her policy that inter-urban rail systems being developed should service the maximum number of people on the rail route and in particular, areas of high unemployment and low income profiles; and if she will inquire from CIE the reason it has not included Inchicore-Ballyfermot for a rail stop on the new main line from Dublin to Cork. [20543/01]

The national development plan and the DTO document, Platform for Change, provides the strategic framework for investment in public transport. One of the objectives of the strategy set out in Platform for Change is to encourage a further increase in participation in the labour force, particularly by disadvantaged groups in society.

I understand from Iarnród Éireann that it is currently reviewing the implications of providing a rail station in the Ballyfermot area and is discussing the matter with the Dublin Transportation Office.

I refer the Deputy to my reply to Parliamentary Question No. 112 of 28 June 2001 on the same subject.
