Vol. 541 No. 2

Written Answers. - Army Barracks.

Nora Owen

Ceist:

259 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Defence the proposals he has for the use of Gormanston Camp; if he plans to sell the camp; if so, if steps have been taken to do this; if the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform is interested in the camp for use as a detention centre; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21172/01]

As I indicated in my reply to Parliamentary Question

No. 6 on 21 June 2001, I have decided to dispose of some land at Gormanston Camp, County Meath, to fund equipment purchases for the Defence Forces. The precise area to be put on the market has yet to be finally determined but the military camp of 57 acres approximately will not be disposed of. The modalities and timing of the sale are at present under consideration.

My Department has received no request from the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform concerning the future use of this property.
