Ceist:

338 Mr. N. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development the action he will take regarding the importation of products (details supplied) from the United Kingdom for distribution here. [22200/01]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 274 and 338 together.

Under the provisions of the Foot and Mouth Disease (Restriction of Import of Vehicles, Machinery and Other Equipment) Order, 2001, as amended, tyres imported from the UK into Ireland required an import licence and certification of cleansing and disinfecting prior to importation. With effect from 5 June 2001 this provision was eased to allow certain imports, including tyres, to be imported from Northern Ireland without licence.

Import control procedures and inspections are being maintained at ports and airports to ensure compliance with the foot and mouth disease precautionary measures. Our success in containing the spread of this disease in Ireland is due in a large measure to the assistance and co-operation of the general public. If the Deputy has details of breaches of the regulations I will have these investigated.
