Vol. 541 No. 2

Written Answers. - Mart Licence.

John Perry

Ceist:

319 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development when a mart licence under section 3 of the Livestock Mart Act, 1967 will be issued for premises in Coolaney, County Sligo; the reason for the delay in granting the licence; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21789/01]

An application for a licence under section 3 of the Livestock Marts Act, 1967, in respect of the premises in question was submitted to my Department on 1 July 2001.

An inspection of the premises by veterinary inspectors of my Department took place on 11 July 2001. The inspection revealed that the premises and its facilities do not meet the requirements of the Livestock Marts Acts, 1967-2000, and regulations made thereunder. My Department issued a letter on 9 August 2001, informing the applicant that a licence could not issue under these circumstances. The applicant was advised that the application for a licence would be re-considered if extensive improvements were made to ensure that the premises could comply with the relevant requirements.
A further inspection was carried out by veterinary inspectors of my Department on 4 September 2001 at the applicant's request. However, while some improvements to the premises had been made since the previous inspection, these were inadequate and did not meet the requirements for a licence as laid down in the Acts. The applicant was informed verbally, on 4 September 2001, by the Department's inspectors of the outcome of the inspection and advised that the premises could not be recommended for a licence as it still did not meet the relevant requirements.
