Vol. 541 No. 2

Written Answers. - Bovine Diseases.

John Bruton

Ceist:

331 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development if he will make a statement on the delay for the past six weeks in culling a herd (details supplied) in County Westmeath; if delays of this kind are normal; if additional compensation will be made available in respect of in-calf animals; and, if not, the reason therefor. [22129/01]

An animal in the herd was diagnosed BSE positive on 30 August 2001, valuation of the herd in question, some 521 animals, took place 13 and 14 September. The valuation agreement was signed by the herdowner on 25 September and the herd was subsequently removed for slaughter six days later, 1 October. This entire process took place over a four week period. Accordingly, there has not been an unreasonable delay in the process.

Full market value is paid for all animals slaughtered. Regarding in calf animals, the in vitro status of the animals is taken into account at the time of valuation. No consequential losses are payable but arrangements regarding unused milk quota can be made with my Department.
