Vol. 541 No. 2

Written Answers. - Asbestos Survey.

Paul McGrath

Ceist:

359 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Finance if his attention has been drawn to a recent asbestos survey of a school (details supplied) in County Westmeath; the date on which this report was received in his Department; the works carried out at this school since this report was received; and when the necessary works will be carried out. [22264/01]

An asbestos survey of the school in question was carried out on 1 June 2001 by consultants commissioned by the Office of Public Works. The report was referred to the Department of Education and Science on 5 June 2001.

Generally speaking any asbestos identified is in good condition although some repairs to the asbestos based roof slates are required and will be carried out over the coming weeks. While there is no danger to occupants from undamaged asbestos it is intended that the main works, including the complete replacement of the asbestos slates, will be undertaken during the school holidays in 2002.

Ceist:

360 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Finance if he will list the primary schools and secondary schools in County Westmeath which have been identified as having such quantities of asbestos in their infrastructure as to be of concern; the date on which each school was surveyed; the works undertaken, including the cost, at each school since these reports; and the projected timeframe for the carrying out of the necessary works at each of these schools. [22265/01]

The position regarding asbestos materials so far identified in schools in County Westmeath is shown in the following table. While there is no danger to occupants from undamaged asbestos the outstanding works will be undertaken over the coming months. The remaining schools in the county, including second level schools, will be surveyed as soon as possible as part of the national asbestos management programme.
