Vol. 541 No. 2

Written Answers. - Orthodontic Service.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

473 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will introduce a grant scheme to assist families to access private orthodontic treatment for their children. [21499/01]

The provision of orthodontic services is the responsibility of the health boards in the first instance.

The chief executive officer of the Eastern Regional Health Authority has informed me that the Northern Area Health Board (NAHB) propose to commence a grant in-aid scheme subject to clarifying issues raised by the representative body of participating private orthodontists – Orthodontic Society of Ireland – in the final stages of their negotiations with the board and subject to legal opinion.

The proposed scheme will operate in the NAHB on a pilot basis for a period of 12 months at which time its operation will be reviewed.

Question No. 474 answered with Question No. 407.
