Vol. 541 No. 2

Written Answers. - Child Care Services.

John Perry

Ceist:

529 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Health and Children the progress made to address the difficulties encountered by a crèche (details supplied) in County Sligo; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21921/01]

As I indicated to the Deputy in my reply of 1 May 2001, my role and responsibility in this area relates to the implementation of the Child Care (Pre-School Services) Regulations, 1996, which give effect to the provisions of Part VII of the Child Care Act, 1991, and provide for notification to, and inspection by, health boards of pre-school services. The regulations apply to pre-schools, playgroups, day nurseries, crèches, childminders looking after more than three children and other similar services which cater for children under six years of age.

The Deputy will be aware from my replies of 1 May, 22 May and 21 June 2001 that the North Western Health Board is assisting the proprietor of this crèche in acquiring suitable alternative accommodation. I understand from the North Western Health Board that options for sourcing a suitable premises and funding options are still being actively pursued by the board. The board has advised that it will continue to make all efforts to resolve this matter as speedily as possible.

I understand that the board communicated with the Deputy regarding this matter on 7 August 2001 and I have asked the chief executive officer of the North Western Health Board to communicate further with the Deputy when this issue is resolved.
