Vol. 541 No. 2

Written Answers. - Victims' Commission.

Emmet Stagg

Ceist:

118 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the progress made to date regarding implementation of the recommendations of the Victims' Commission; the progress made regarding those recommendations which would apply to the survivors and relatives of those who died in the Dublin and Monaghan bombings; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22028/01]

The work of the independent commission of inquiry into the Dublin and Monaghan bombings of 1974, the sole member of which is Mr. Justice Henry Barron, is now well advanced. In addition, the Government has approved the provision of assistance of up to a maximum of £162,000 in the current year to the judge for the forgotten group of victims and relatives of victims of the bombings in respect of a family support centre; approved such further assistance for the operation of the centre in 2002 as the Minister, with the agreement of the Minister for Finance, may determine; and decided that support services should also be provided for victims and relatives of victims of the Dundalk bombings.

The remaining recommendations cover a wide range of areas which fall within the areas of competence of a number of Departments and agencies, including my Department. Work, based on consultations with other Departments and agencies, is coming to a conclusion on developing an implementation plan in respect of these remaining recommendations. I expect to submit the plan to Government for approval shortly.
