Vol. 541 No. 2

Written Answers. - Traffic Regulations.

Brian Hayes

Ceist:

660 Mr. B. Hayes asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government his plans to reduce the number of heavy goods vehicles travelling in built up or urban areas; the discussions he has had with the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform on this issue; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20960/01]

Road traffic regulations permit the application of a restriction on vehicles over a certain weight from entering a public road.

The application of such a restriction, including a reference to the relevant weight limit, is indicated through the positioning of an appropriate traffic sign. Vehicles in respect of which the restriction applies, may only enter a relevant road for the purpose of accessing or egressing properties accessible only from it. Decisions in relation to the application of this restriction are exclusively for the road authorities concerned.
