Vol. 541 No. 2

Written Answers. - Fire Service.

Michael Bell

Ceist:

666 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if an application for the provision of a new fire station for Drogheda, County Louth, has been made by Drogheda Corporation; the proposed location and cost of the project; if sanction has be given; if not, when sanction will be given; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21013/01]

An application for approval in principle for a new fire station at Drogheda was submitted to my Department by Drogheda Corporation on 6 March 2001. Additional information in respect of this proposal, including details of site acquisition and project cost, has been sought from the corporation and this is awaited. On receipt, a decision will issue to the corporation as soon as possible. However, additional considerations such as the greatly increased market penetration of mobile phones and growing concerns about the possible adverse effects on road safety when they are used inappropriately, have also arisen since the strategy was adopted. I am therefore now considering the regulation of their use by drivers and have asked the high level group on road safety for a view on what could constitute appropriate measures.
