Ceist:

759 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if the Roads Act, 1993, confers on him the authority to direct the National Roads Authority in writing regarding functions assigned to it by or under the Roads Act, 1993; if the Act requires that the National Roads Authority shall comply with his direction; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22496/01]

The Roads Act, 1993, assigns overall responsibility to the National Roads Authority for the planning and supervision of works for the construction and maintenance of national roads. Section 41 of the Act confers power on the Minister for Environment and Local Government to give a direction in writing to the NRA in relation to any of the functions assigned to it. The NRA must comply with any such direction. To date, no directions have issued to the NRA under this provision.
