Vol. 541 No. 2

Written Answers. - Summer Jobs Scheme.

Michael Ring

Ceist:

794 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs the way in which two applications by persons (details supplied) in County Mayo for the student summer jobs scheme were assessed; and the reason their applications were not approved. [21523/01]

To qualify for participation in the students summer jobs scheme, students must satisfy a means test which is broadly similar to the means test which applies to applicants for unemployment assistance. In assessing means, account is taken of the parents' gross income less income tax, PRSI, superannuation, private health insurance, union fees, rent or mortgage payments and some travel costs. The weekly means of the student are then assessed at 17% of the net family income calculated on this basis. In the case of the persons concerned the weekly means were calculated on the basis of details of the income from employment of the father and mother. The means were assessed at £82.79, which exceeds the means limit of £65 for entitlement to this allowance. Details of the calculations involved are being forwarded to the Deputy.
