Vol. 541 No. 2

Written Answers. - Architectural Heritage.

Liam Aylward

Ceist:

834 Mr. Aylward asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands if she will approve the application for funding by an association (details supplied) in County Kilkenny; and when approval to have restoration works carried out to a medieval wall (details supplied) will issue. [21281/01]

The association referred to by the Deputy has provided a valuable service by maintaining a graveyard which is in the ownership of Dúchas, the Heritage Service of my Department, for several years. Officials from my Department have been in contact with the association and have agreed a contribution to assist in covering their costs. It is agreed that the medieval wall is in need of some repair. The growth on the wall will be removed shortly and conservation works will be carried out as soon as resources permit.

John McGuinness

Ceist:

835 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands the plans she has to have work undertaken on Graces Old Church, Church, Tullaroan, County Kilkenny; if a report on the condition of the structure is available; if the required work will be funded in 2001; and if a date has been set to commence work. [21684/01]

In a previous reply I indicated that the county council was awaiting documentation from its solicitors to enable it transfer the property to my Department. I understand that this legal issue remains unresolved and it is not possible, therefore, to give a date when the transfer of the church will be completed. In the interim, I will investigate the possibility of taking the property into my guardianship, pending the transfer of title. Any further action on my part must await clarification of title.
