871 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of people involved in road traffic accidents in the past 12 months, whose blood alcohol level was over the legal limit; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21251/01]
I am informed by the Garda authorities that the details sought by the Deputy are not readily available and that it would require a disproportionate amount of Garda time and resources to compile such information. However, I am informed that there were 8,823 prosecutions for drink driving-related offences in 1999, the last year for which statistics are available. Moreover, detailed statistics in relation to the number of fatal and serious injury accidents are provided by the National Roads Authority, the most recent report from which is in respect of 1999.
