934 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the minimum height requirements which must be satisfied by Garda recruits; when it is proposed to change the regulations; and if he will give details of the new arrangements to be put in place. [22282/01]
Earlier this year I obtained the approval of the Government to abolish the height requirement for entry to the Garda Síochána – 59 for males and 55 for females. Regulations providing, inter alia, for the abolition of the height requirement have been drawn up in my Department and I intend to bring them to Government for approval in the very near future. I can assure the Deputy that the height requirement will not apply in any future Garda competition.
