Vol. 541 No. 2

Written Answers. - Garda Recruitment.

Dinny McGinley

Ceist:

147 Mr. McGinley asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the minimum height requirements which must be satisfied by applicant Garda recruits; when it is proposed to change the regulations; and if he will detail the new arrangements to be put in place. [22299/01]

Earlier this year I obtained the approval of the Government to abolish the height requirement for entry to the Garda Síochána – 5'9" for males and 5'5" for females. Regulations providing, inter alia, for the abolition of the height requirement have been drawn up in my Department and I intend to bring them to Government for approval in the very near future. I assure the Deputy that the height requirement will not apply in any future Garda competition.
