Vol. 541 No. 2

Written Answers. - Garda Strength.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

965 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if Garda strength in the various divisions in Leinster is commensurate with demographic requirements; if these areas compare favourably with policing levels in other parts of the country; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22507/01]

I am informed by the Garda authorities, who are responsible for the deployment of resources to individual areas, that the allocation of Garda manpower throughout the country is constantly monitored and reviewed. Such monitoring ensures that optimum use is made of Garda resources and the best possible Garda service is provided to the general public. For the Deputy's information, I am setting out hereunder the strength – all ranks – of each operational Garda division as at 1 October 2001:

Ceist:

966 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform his views on whether extra Garda strength is required in the various towns in north Kildare; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22508/01]

I am informed by the Garda authorities, who are responsible for the deployment of resources to individual areas, that Garda stations in the north Kildare area fall within three Garda districts. Maynooth and Celbridge Garda stations are in the district of Naas – Carlow-Kildare division – Kilcock Garda station is in the district of Ashbourne – Louth-Meath Division – and Leixlip Garda station is in the district of Lucan – DMA west division. The current strength – all ranks – of each of these districts as at 1 October 2001 is as set out hereunder:

Ashbourne

69

Lucan

155

Naas

118

I am further informed that local Garda management is satisfied that the current manpower strength in north Kildare is adequate to meet the present policing needs of the area. When the proposed new Garda station is built in Leixlip, allocation of manpower to that station will be reviewed within the overall context of the needs of Garda districts throughout the country.
