Higgins asked the Minister for Education and Science if he has satisfied himself that the patron of Scoil Sailearna, Inverin, Connemara, County Galway has adequately discharged his functions in relation to the recent filling of a vacancy for the post of principal; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The appointment of teachers is a function of the boards of management of individual schools. My Department's function in relation to such matters extends to sanctioning the appointment of teachers to posts on receipt of confirmation from boards of management that the appointment procedures have been adhered to.
In the particular case to which the Deputy refers, I have been informed that my Department is satisfied with the assurances received from the board of management that there was no breach of the selection-appointment procedures as are laid down in the booklet, Boards of Management of National Schools – Constitution of Boards and Rules of Procedure. In the circumstances my Department sanctioned the appointment of the successful candidate to the post of principal teacher.
