Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Ceist:

1027 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of temporary full-time teachers who were employed by his Department for each year from 1996 to 2000; the number of eligible part-time teachers who were employed by his Department for the years 1995 to 2000 inclusive; the number of temporary full-time teachers who received back-pay for any or all of the summer months of the years listed; and the number of EPT teachers who received back-pay for any or all of the summer months of the listed years. [21286/01]

As the Deputy will be aware the Government significantly increased the number of teaching posts in the years 1997-98 to 2000-01 by more than 3,000. We also greatly increased the number of teachers in training during the same period. These improvements created a demand for extra teachers which would not be fully met in the short-term. The numbers of temporary whole-time and eligible part-time teachers employed in secondary and community-comprehensive schools in the years in question were as follows:

1995/96

437 TWT

452 EPT

1996/97

631 TWT

692 EPT

1997/98

675 TWT

770 EPT

1998/99

783 TWT

951 EPT

1999/00

915 TWT

1,132 EPT

2000/01

1,000 TWT

1,147 EPT

The numbers of TWT and EPT teachers employed in VEC schools in 1998-99 and 1999-2000 were as follows:

1998/1999

220 TWT

888 EPT

1999/2000

257 TWT

884 EPT

Details of the numbers in respect of the years 1995-96, 1996-97, 1997-98 and 2000-01 are being compiled and will be forwarded to the Deputy in due course. Temporary whole-time and eligible part-time teachers are employed on an annual contract and are paid through the summer months.
