Vol. 541 No. 2

Written Answers. - Higher Education Grants.

Pat Carey

Ceist:

1126 Mr. P. Carey asked the Minister for Education and Science if he has satisfied himself that the regulations governing the payment of a top-up higher education grant to a person (details supplied) in Dublin 11 are being properly interpreted by the City of Dublin VEC; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22184/01]

Under the terms of the four maintenance grant schemes administered by my Department there are a number of health board and social welfare payments which are excluded in the calculation of reckonable income. A means-tested one parent family payment is one of the standard exclusions. Deserted wife's benefit is not a means tested payment and is not, therefore, excluded from the calculation of reckonable income. My Department is satisfied that City of Dublin VEC has correctly interpreted and applied the regulations governing the payment of the special rates of maintenance grant, in respect of the person to whom the Deputy refers.
