Vol. 542 No. 5

Written Answers. - Free Fees Initiative.

John Perry

Ceist:

455 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will waive or reduce the fees imposed on a person (details supplied) in County Sligo; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25004/01]

My Department's free fees initative provides, under certain conditions, for the payment of tuition fees in respect of students attending full-time undergraduate courses, which must normally be of a minimum of two years duration. My Department understands that the person, to whom the Deputy refers, is attending a certificate in safety and health at work which is a part-time course offered by UCD under the university industry programme. Students attend the course one morning a week at the FÁS training centre in Athlone. As the course in question does not meet the definition of an approved course under the free fees initiative, students attending the course are not eligible to benefit under the initiative.
