Vol. 542 No. 6

Written Answers. - Revenue Investigations.

Liz McManus

Ceist:

93 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Finance the number of individuals, companies and trusts being investigated by the Revenue Commissioners arising from an inquiry (details supplied); the number of cases in which settlements have been agreed; the total amount paid to date; the number of cases still outstanding; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25353/01]

I am advised by the Revenue Commissioners that in 1998 they obtained details of 429 cases with investments in the scheme to which the Deputy refers. To date, 292 of these cases have been settled and 137 are still under investigation.

Some 11 cases are under investigation for possible prosecution through the courts.

Revenue has collected £25.3 million or 32.12 million in tax, interest and penalties in respect of these cases. This is made up of £18.76 million or 23.82 million in settled cases and £6.54 million or 8.3 million in respect of payments on account in cases still under investigation.

Following a further review of their records by the financial institution concerned, a supplementary list containing 22 new cases was received by Revenue in April 2001. Of these cases, 15 involve very small sums and are unlikely to involve significant tax evasion. All the additional cases will be investigated as appropriate.
