Vol. 542 No. 6

Written Answers. - Revenue Commissioners.

Paul McGrath

Ceist:

154 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Finance the progress which has been made in drafting the heads of a Bill to implement reform of the Revenue Commissioners; when he expects these reforms to be implemented; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25632/01]

Arising from the work of the Committee of Public Accounts Sub-Committee on Certain Revenue Matters a number of recommendations were made in relation to the reorganisation of Revenue, the establishment of the Office of the Revenue Commissioners on a more modern statutory basis and the governance of Revenue.

Work on preparing the necessary legislation is under way in my Department. Some of the reforms included in the recommendations require no legislative amendment and I have been advised that the Revenue Commissioners are taking steps to implement these.

With regard to the draft legislation, as I have stated before, the timetable for implementation will have to be considered in the context of the timing of the report of the Moriarty Tribunal, whose terms of reference overlap with this area.
