Vol. 543 No. 1

Written Answers. - Medical Cards.

Pat Rabbitte

Ceist:

45 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for Health and Children the extent of the budget overrun caused by the extension of the GMS to the over 70s; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25624/01]

The Government decided to extend full eligibility under the general medical services to all persons aged 70 and over with effect from 1 July of this year in the context of budget 2001. While an additional number, over the original estimate, of over 70s are now in receipt of medical cards, it is not possible to state at this point what the year end costs of the new eligibility arrangements will be. My Department is monitoring the situation and it is expected that a clearer picture in regard to this matter will emerge over the next few weeks.
