Vol. 543 No. 2

Written Answers. - Public Transport.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

198 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if she will have Irish Rail carry out a feasibility study on the re-opening of the Cork/Youghal rail link and a commuter link between Blarney and Cork. [26518/01]

As I stated in my reply to Dáil Question No. 208 of 16 October 2001, the draft final report of the Cork area strategic plan proposes, among other things, the development of commuter rail services between Blarney and Midleton operating via Kent Station and the construction of a number of stations in between. However, a rail service to Youghal is not envisaged under the plan at this stage. I understand that Cork Corporation and Cork County Council have recently adopted the plan. Iarnród Éireann expects shortly to put out to tender the undertaking of a detailed feasibility study so that all aspects of the rail proposals can be examined in depth.
