Vol. 543 No. 2

Written Answers. - Building Regulations.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

304 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Finance the extent to which his Department monitors the existence of asbestos in buildings under the aegis of Government Departments; the current results in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26969/01]

A detailed survey of all public buildings, including Government offices, Garda stations, schools, heritage buildings and military establishments, is being undertaken by the Office of Public Works to determine the location, type, form and condition of any asbestos materials present and the steps necessary to manage the materials safely. To date approximately 2,000 buildings have been surveyed.

Works necessary to deal with the problem are carried out on a priority basis. In all cases so far identified, works are completed, are in hand or are in the process of being commissioned.
