Local authorities are empowered under article 7 of the Road Traffic (Public Service Vehicles) (Amendment) Regulations, 1995 (S.I. No. 136 of 1995) to declare an area to be a taximeter area and additionally to extend or alter the boundary of a taximeter area. The exercise of this power is reserved to the elected members of the authority.
