Vol. 543 No. 2

Written Answers. - Arts Funding.

Dick Spring

Ceist:

632 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands her views on the Tintéan Theatre project, Ballybunion, County Kerry; and if she has sought funding from the Department of Finance to allow this project to be completed in 2002. [26458/01]

The Tinteán Theatre project was the subject of an application under my Department's ACCESS scheme for assisting arts and cultural capital projects. However, the independent committee established by me to assess applications under the scheme determined that the project did not meet the criteria necessary to allow it to be referred forward for consideration in the context of final grant allocations. Consequently, it was not possible to allocate any ACCESS funding to the project.

As the Deputy will be aware, I subsequently met a deputation on behalf of Tintéan Theatre and I am happy to acknowledge the strong case made to me regarding the merits of the project. Given the full amount of the funding available to me for the ACCESS scheme had already been allocated, I can confirm to the Deputy that I have followed through on my commitment to seek possible additional funding.
