Vol. 543 No. 2

Written Answers. - Residency Permits.

Ceist:

661 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of applications his Department has received for residency on the basis of the birth of a child for each of the past five years; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26072/01]

The number of applications my Department has received for permission to remain on the basis of parentage of an Irish citizen child from January to end September 2001 is 4,397. A total of 2,436 applications have been approved during the same period.

Prior to 2001, statistics were only maintained on applications processed, not on applications received. The number of persons granted permission to remain in the State on the basis of their parentage of an Irish citizen was 1,515 in 2000 and 1,428 in 1999. No applications of this type were processed in 1998, as the basis for granting such permission was under review at that time. In 1997, 107 current or former asylum applicants were granted permission to remain on the basis of their parentage of an Irish citizen. Figures are not available for the number of persons other than current or former asylum seekers granted permission to remain on this basis in 1997.
