Vol. 543 No. 2

Written Answers. - Cannabis Classification.

Ceist:

689 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if the UK Home Secretary consulted him regarding his decision to downgrade the classification of cannabis; the impact this will have on the common travel area with the UK; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26375/01]

I am aware that the Home Secretary has proposed to seek advice on the reclassification of cannabis under UK legislation but that no decision has been taken in the matter pending receipt of such advice from medical and scientific experts. The proposal, if implemented, would still mean that cannabis would remain a controlled drug and that both possession and supply would remain criminal offences. The proposal will not impact on the common travel area in that there are no plans to change the laws here relating to the possession of cannabis.
