Vol. 543 No. 2

Written Answers. - Garda Deployment.

Dick Spring

Ceist:

690 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will ensure that Garda foot patrols are on duty in housing estates in Tralee. [26439/01]

I am informed by the Garda authorities which are responsible for the detailed allocation of personnel and resources to individual areas, that the town and its 58 housing estates are regularly patrolled by gardaí, on foot, motorcycle or in patrol cars. In addition, there are three community policing schemes which cover most of the housing estates, with one garda attached full time to each scheme, and 31 neighbourhood watch and five community alert schemes, all of which have a liaison garda. I am assured that the level of deployment and patrolling in the town is constantly kept under review by local Garda management to ensure that policing priorities are met.

Ceist:

691 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of gardaí on duty at Tralee Garda station for each 24 hour period at weekends. [26440/01]

I am informed by the Garda authorities, which are responsible for the detailed allocation of personnel and resources to individual areas, that the personnel strength – all ranks – at Tralee Garda station as at 31 December for the years 1997 to 2000, inclusive, and currently are as set out hereunder:

Year

Strength

1997

76

1998

79

1999

78

2000

80

31/10/01

86

The above figures represent an increase of ten or 13% in the personnel allocated to Tralee Garda station. I am further informed by the Garda authorities that, for operational reasons, it is contrary to practice to release details of the number of gardaí on duty in any particular Garda station over a 24 hour period.
