Vol. 543 No. 2

Written Answers. - Tourism Organisations.

Dick Spring

Ceist:

713 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation if he will consider the unification of County Kerry under one regional tourism organisation. [25990/01]

In 1998, the Government decided to extend Shannon Development's geographical remit to include the north Kerry area, while Cork-Kerry Tourism, under the aegis of the Regional Tourism Authority, continued to have responsibility for south Kerry. As an integrated development agency for the mid-west region, part of Shannon Development's role is to initiate and support tourism promotion and development as a key element in the achievement of overall economic growth throughout the region.

I understand that both the Kerry County Development Board and the county manager are at present examining the implications of these arrangements for tourism promotion and development in the county. Any change in the geographical remit of Shannon Development would require amending legislation, which would be a matter for my colleague, the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment. Any change in the remit of the Regional Tourism Authority would be a matter for Bord Fáilte and the Regional Tourism Authority.
