Vol. 543 No. 5

Written Answers. - Irish Blood Transfusion Service.

Ceist:

297 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Health and Children if prospective blood donors will be allowed donate blood at the headquarters of the Irish Blood Transfusion Service in St. James's Hospital; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [27499/01]

There is a platelet donor programme in place in the National Blood Centre at St James's Hospital. The centre also provides facilities for autologous donations i.e. where prospective patients may pre-deposit their own blood prior to surgery. The Irish Blood Transfusion Service also plans to collect whole blood donations at the centre on an appointment basis.

A new fixed donation clinic is in operation in D'Olier Street. This is a clinic where people can drop in and donate blood without prior appointment. It is conveniently located to many of the main bus routes and where there are high numbers of people at all times. This clinic has proved to be extremely successful and is supplemented by mobile clinics at various locations throughout the city.
