Seán Ryan

370 Mr. S. Ryan asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government his views on changing the educational requirements for entry into the clerical grades in the local authorities with a view to substituting a requirement for an IT qualification; and his plans to seek agreement with the relevant trade unions on this issue. [27524/01]

Possession of IT skills should in practice confer an advantage to candidates in competing for local authority clerical positions. However, in view of the generalist nature of such positions and of the diversity of skills which local authorities may require from people in these grades, it is not proposed at this stage to declare formal qualifications in IT a being necessary for such posts. Neither has this been sought by the Local Government Management Services Board or by local authorities generally.
