Vol. 543 No. 5

Written Answers. - Garda Stations.

P. J. Sheehan

Ceist:

135 Mr. Sheehan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform his plans to construct a new Garda station at Schull, County Cork; if finance will be provided for same in the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform Estimates for 2002; and the plans he has to build a new Garda station or refurbish the existing Garda station to a modern standard. [26161/01]

It is proposed to construct a new area headquarters on the existing Garda station site at Schull and I am informed by the Office Of Public Works that the necessary procedures are currently under way in that office to facilitate this work. Although it is not possible to say at this point when this project will commence, I can assure the Deputy that the matter will be progressed as quickly as overall priorities within the Garda building programme and the availability of financial and other resources allow. Finance is not provided in the Garda Vote of my Department for the construction of Garda stations or, in general, works of a capital nature. Capital works are undertaken by the Office of Public Works and funded from its Vote.
