Vol. 544 No. 2

Written Answers. - Teacher Training.

Richard Bruton

Ceist:

149 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will introduce a primary teacher training course available on a part-time basis for persons who are temporarily filling full-time teaching posts in primary schools as teachers without a primary teaching education. [28354/01]

At present, the courses run in the State that allow for appointment to a permanent post in a primary school are the Bachelor of Education degree and the full-time 18-month postgraduate diploma in primary teaching. Both of these courses are run in the colleges of education, which specialise in the training of primary teachers. In the 2000-01 academic year there were some 3,300 students enrolled and pursuing various stages of these programmes. There are no plans at present to provide any other types of courses. However, all aspects of primary teacher training are the subject of ongoing review between my Department and the colleges of education.
